Drenthe is a province in the northern part of the Netherlands. In the early 19th century Drenthe was a largely and isolated region. Although the isolation was broken in the 20th century it is still relatively uninhabited. Therefor Drenthe is a very nice place for walking and biking tours.

National Park Dwingelderveld

We visited the national park Dwingelderveld. It is the largest wetland heath in Western Europe. Wet lows – called mud flats – and high sand ridges alternate in the vast Dwingelderveld. You will find heather, forest, juniper groves, drifting sand and ponds.  Some of these ponds originated in the ice age, others are the result of peat excavationsThere are numerous options for enjoying the special landscape. You can walk, cycle, run, ride horses and watch birds in huts and behind the scenes. And in Ruinen you will find a visitor centre, the ideal base to discover the area.

Visit the sheepfold

Near the visitorcentre, you will find the Ruiner sheepfold. Open on Sundays (in the winter from 1 pm to 5 pm, in the summer from 11 am to 5 pm) you will learn everything about the sheep, the herd and the heath management. There are also regular demonstrations with wool in the leading role such as spiders, felts or carding.

Where to camp?

Around the Dwingelderveld there are several campsites. We visited camping site D’oldekamp in Ansen. A nice location, although the road nearby gives some noise. But te pitches are very spacious. Ther are a few playgrounds for the little children. You can also visit the goats and the ducks.
Another good place to stay is Holidaypark ‘ Wiltzangh’. This location is bigger than D’oldekamp.  There are approximately 20 camperpitches in front of the park. At the Wiltzangh you can find  a swimming pool, bike rental and a restaurant. The restaurant D’Oele is nice place to drink a beer. But we were a bit disappointed about the food. For a nice dinner we recommend to go to the village Ruinen where you can find many restaurants. In Ansen is a good restaurant called the Huyskamer. The Wiltzang is located next to the Dwingelderveld and nearby the visitors centre and the sheepfold.
